Harness Racing Tips

Harness Racing Tips and Previews, Friday 5th March

Our experts break down the main harness races from the Menangle and Terang to find the best tips and value

After a fill up on the punt last week with two of our three best bets getting up we’re set for another enormous night of harness racing on Saturday.

A host of Group 1 races headlined by the Miracle Mile from Menangle as well as a thick, competitive 11-race program from Melton is what we’re greeted with this weekend.

The wheels are in motion and the best bets have been finalised.

Sit back in the sulky and let’s drive home some winners!

menangle race 4

#3 majestic man

They couldn’t possibly beat Majestic Man after his brilliant win in the Group 1 Trotting Grand Prix last Saturday.

There was a bit of a mayhem early in that race when one of the leaders galloped and it meant Majestic Man was posted out and unable to find the lead when the gates folded back.

Brad Williamson had to bide his time and then at an opportune moment around the back straight of the first lap he slipped Majestic Man a bit of reign and powered him to the front.

He would have been excused had he not won, but his six-year-old gelding just kept packing the punches and would eventually go on to win by 4.5 metres to Pink Galahs, who was brave in second.

Tonight he’s drawn gate three and he can bludge his way to the front and do exactly as he did last time: lead, kick clear and win.

While the $1.45 on offer might not entice punters, an exacta with Pink Galahs looks the way to play this.

Suggested Bet: Exacta – 3 and 5

MeNANGLE RACE 5

#9 western sonodar

This five-year-old gelding is still trying to get out from behind horses after a desperately unlucky run saw him finish sixth behind King of Swing in the Group 1 Schweppes Sprint over this course and distance last start.

He was a victim of circumstance after being dragged back from a wide gate in the front row and then forced to take up a spot four back on the marker pegs.

His driver Rebecca Bartley was afforded no room at all throughout the run as she tried to weave a passage in the run home but unfortunately never saw daylight.

The wider draw tonight with a bit more speed to his immediate outside should see him settle one off the fence and be able to get a clear crack at them when the whips are cracking.

He’s ready to run a huge race here!

Suggested Bet: Western Sonador each-way at $8 the win and $2.4 the place

Suggested Exotic: Trifecta – 3, 9/ 3, 5, 9/ 1, 3, 5, 9

menangle race 6

#3 tasty delight

We might be able to buy some tasty delights if he replicates what he did last start.

A dominant winner over this course and distance, this three-year-old gelding from the Brian Portelli yard is drawn to get all the favours again tonight.

His last start win was of a horse who is the consummate professional. He jumped cleanly, showed good pace early to lead the race and gave Portelli one of the easiest drives he’ll ever have.

Tasty Delight would go on to win by just under seven metres and if he finds the front again, as is expected, it’s going to be another win on the board.

The main danger is Patsbeachstorm.

He, too, was brilliant in his lead-up win but he was drawn favourable down in gate one and tonight he is drawn out deep on the front row.

Tasty Delight looks one of the better bets tonight with the favourable draw.

Suggested Bet: Tasty Delight win at $2.9

Suggested Exotic: Quinella 3 & 8

menangle RACE 7

#4 expensive ego

Going against the odds-on favourite King of Swing and siding with Expensive Ego.

Trainer Belinda McCarthy has this four-year-old trotter going incredibly well at the moment and his win last start was a testament to that.

He had to take his medicine and settle in the rear half of the field in the early part of his race due to the abundance of early speed that was set alight as soon as the arms folded back.

Driver David Moran then made a dashing move around the outside of the field with 1000 metres left to go and sat outside the lead after being three deep no cover to get there.

When the race was on in the home straight, Moran idled up as quiet as a church mouse to eyeball the leader. Moran then gave Expensive Ego one slap down the hind and he responded to surge away and win by three metres.

The time was nearly a second quicker than that of King of Swing’s last start win.

Looks a fantastic each-way bet here.

Suggested Bet: Expensive Ego each-way at $8 the win and $1.75 the place

Suggested Exotic: Quinella 4 & 6

melton race 7

#8 like a wildfire

Like A Wildfire loves racing first-up and has won his last two starts when resuming from a spell.

His career record reads well with his five first-up runs boasting three wins which suggests he enjoys doing his racing when he has the freshness in his legs to do so.

He has drawn to get the run in behind Malcolm’s Delight who is the favourite and likely leader of this race.

If that does occur and Malcolm’s Delight punches up to lead, Like A Wildfire will be afforded the advantage of the sprint lane where he can dart up the inside and hopefully out sprint the favourite late in the race.

Suggested Bet: Life A Wildfire each-way at $7 the win and $1.75 the place

Suggested Exotic Bet: Trifecta – 1, 8/ 1, 8/ Field
