The Rundown
Outside of the Magic Millions Carnival in January, the Stradbroke Handicap is richest race on the Queensland racing calendar.
Run over 1400 metres during the winter carnival, the race is heaped with prestige and attracts some of the best sprinting and mile horses in the land.
With the conditions set at Group 1 handicap level, the race is for three-year-old horses or older with the best rated horses in the field getting the most weight.
Inaugurated in 1890, the race was originally run over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres, but was eventually increased to 1400 metres in 1953.
Since then, the race has always been run at Eagle Farm bar 2015 when the reconstruction of Eagle Farm saw the race transferred to Doomben.
The Famous Winners and Record Results
Every time a racing enthusiast mentions the Stradbroke Handicap the minds go straight to champion New Zealand-bred thoroughbred Rough Habit.
The John Wheeler-trained galloper scored back-to-back victories in the race by taking home the 1991 and 1992 editions of the Stradbroke Handicap.
It is the 1992 win that has everyone remember this horse after he stormed home from a minute back and darted back to the inside rail to find a passage through to victory.
Since then, horses like All Our Mob (1994) and Dane Ripper (1996) have all been triumphant in the race.
More recently, the locals have had success with Tyzone (2020) winning for Queensland-based training duo Toby & Trent Edmonds.
The current defending champion is Tofane.
Toldeo (1998) holds the record for the fastest time run in the race with a 1:20.2 win also being the track record over 1400 metres at Eagle Farm and is yet to be broken to date.
The Statistics
The saying that barriers win races often rings true, but for Stradbroke Handicaps it is clear you can almost drawn anywhere and win.
Barrier 3 and barrier 18 have provided four winners each since 1983, while barrier two is yet to provide punters with a winners in that time frame.
Favourites have had a pretty stiff time of in the Stradbroke Handicap in the near four-decade time frame from 1983.
Only eight favourites have lobbed for punters with the most recent being Trekking in 2019 who put an to a decade-long drought of favourites going under in the race.
The boys generally dominate the finishing places of the Stradbroke Handicap.
A total of seven girls have won the race since 1983 with the rest of the winners being either colts or geldings.
You want to be a horse who has a dynamic turn-of-foot to win this race as it usually favours the sprinting types.
Most horses will use the Doomben 10,000 and the Kingsford-Smith Cup as their lead-up to the Stradbroke Handicap.
Others will use the Group 1 Goodwood in Adelaide as a platform to the Stradbroke Handicap.
