Saturday Best Tips & Previews, January 25th

Sandown Lakeside and Royal Randwick are the places to be this Saturday. The Listed Blue Diamond Previews and the Group 3 Manfred Stakes will have punters flocking to the southeast of Melbourne, while a competitive summer program will ensure a healthy crowd is front and centre in the eastern suburbs of old Sydney town.

Sandown Lakeside and Royal Randwick are the places to be this Saturday. The Listed Blue Diamond Previews and the Group 3 Manfred Stakes will have punters flocking to the southeast of Melbourne. At the same time, a competitive summer program will ensure a healthy crowd is front and centre in the eastern suburbs of old Sydney town.

Sandown Lakeside Race 3

#1 Shining Smile

Shining Smile is the one to beat on exposed form. The Spirit Of Boom colt oozes class, and his last start victory at Caulfield is still fresh in the memory bank. A recent jump-out looked ominous; I suspect the big boy will get all the favours in the run from a perfect inside draw. Ready to announce himself!

Tentyris is well related to the wonder mare Divine Madonna. The Street Boss colt has caught the eyes of punters at the trials, and I suspect he will be fully wound up for a first-up tilt. Barrier one will allow him to drift back and find his hooves, and if he is presented with his run at the right time, he can challenge late.

Suggested Bet: Shining Smile @ $3.00

Sandown Lakeside Race 4

#2 Palm Angel

Palm Angel was ultra-impressive on debut. The Starspangledbanner filly put her rivals to the sword with ease, and she looks to have a bright future in front of her. From the wide gate, I expect her to ping the lids and find the bunny. If she can record even furlongs early, it could be curtains before they swing for home.

Price Tag is knocking on the door. Both career outings have been full of merit, and I suspect her maiden victory is just around the corner. The inside draw will allow her to sit closer in the run, and if Tyler Schiller can angle her off the dulex when the whips are cracking, she will loom to win. A must for all broader multiples and exotics.

Suggested Bet: Palm Angel @ $5.00

Wonder Boy was good first-up against the more experienced and seasoned gallopers. He was only left flat-footed inside the final furlong, and I suspect he strips fitter after his fresh assignment. His record at the distance must be respected, and there has been a flood of early money for the Cosmic Force gelding. The blinkers are advantageous, and he looks extremely well placed dropping back to his own age group. Hard to toss.

Ndola resumes with an air of expectation. The Justify colt showed promise in his debut campaign, and a recent barrier should give his opponents sleepless nights leading into Saturday’s event. He is a 1200m specialist and loves Sandown more than Zipping. His racing pattern and style will always require an element of good fortune.

Suggested Bet: Wonder Boy @ $5.50

Royal Randwick Race 7

#1 Bonita Queen

Bonita Queen looks one of the better bets on a competitive summer racing program. The I Am Invincible mare won with authority first-up and looks well placed in this company. The 1200m is ideal at this stage of her campaign, and I suspect she has the class and fitness edge on the majority of her rivals. The perennial front-runner will take catching with a clean break from the barriers.

Hellavadancer is over the odds. The Hellbent mare traditionally performs well fresh, and her best form reads incredibly well for this event. The 3kg apprentice claim is advantageous, and I suspect she is cherry-ripe for a first-up tilt after two ominous barrier trials. Her recent winning record is the biggest deterrent.

Suggested Bet: Bonita Queen @ $2.70

Royal Randwick Race 8

#7 Starman

Starman can cause a boilover in the penultimate event on the card. The Zoustar gelding is always there, and this looks a winnable assignment for the consistent six-year-old. The inside barrier will allow him to roll forward, and if he can cheat the clock throughout, it may be his moment in the sun on Saturday. His ability to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory is the primary concern.

Headley Grange will have supporters after producing a dominant last-start victory at Wyong. The Exosphere gelding broke all the on course clocks in the process, and I suspect there is still plenty of improvement to come for the preparation. Barrier three will give Adam Hyeronimus a menagerie of options, and if he presses the go button on the enigmatic four-year-old at the right time, I expect him to fight out the finish. Acid test.

Suggested Bet: Starman @ $8.00

Royal Randwick Race 9

#1 Flying Destiny

Flying Destiny can run a drum at a juicy price. The Flying Artie gelding is a model of consistency, and the 3kg apprentice claim puts him into all winning conversations. The class drop is advantageous, and a perfect inside draw will allow him to take up a prominent role. The gritty five-year-old will swing the bend with his nose in front, and if he can pinch a decent break before they climb the famous Randwick rise, he will give a bold sight.

Step Aside will start favourite despite producing a winless winter campaign. The Redwood gelding will appreciate the current track conditions, and I suspect he will be there to win first-up after producing two cheeky barrier trials at Warwick Farm. He will occupy the box seat throughout after drawing the cherry, and if the gaps appear before they run for the doctor, he can break through for an overdue victory. Take on trust!

Suggested Bet: Flying Destiny @ $12.00
