UEFA Champions League Tips and Previews, Thursday 5th October

The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League is up and running and we dissect four blockbuster matches in the Group stage.

The second match-ups of the Group stages continue on Thursday, with Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, and Milan all in action.

BetDeluxe takes a close look at four of the mouthwatering games on offer.

Newcastle vs. PSG

October 5th, 6:00am

One of the games of the day, Newcastle United will host Paris Saint-Germain as narrow favourites at St James’ Park.

It was an impressive first-up performance from the Magpies as they kept AC Milan scoreless in their trip to San Siro. While Milan continually applied pressure with 25 shots to six, Newcastle stood tall and held out for a nil-all draw.

The Frenchman put the competition on notice with their sensational 2-0 triumph over Dortmund, with Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi doing the damage on the scoreboard.

It will be the very first time these sides have ever met, with Newcastle winning just three of their 13 games against French opponents in all competitions.

While Newcastle will undoubtedly put up a fight in front of the home fans, the pressure is all on PSG, Luis Enrique and Mbappe.

Same Game Multi:

  • Leg 1: PSG to win
  • Leg 2: Over 23.5 shots
  • Leg 3: K. Mbappe score anytime
  • Leg 4: G. Ramos score anytime
  • Odds: $9.00

RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City

October 5th, 6:00am

Unsurprisingly, the reigning champions will head into this game as the shortest-priced favourite on the day, with punters crunching them into $1.72 with BetDeluxe.

The current EPL leaders (6-1) opened their Group G account with a dominant 3-1 victory over Crvena zvezda, including a Julian Alvarez double in the space of 13 minutes. Such was the one-sided nature of the game; Pep Guardiola’s chargers piled on 37 shots to just three and had 76% of the possession.

As for RB Leipzig, they solidified their fifth straight Group stage win with an equally impressive 3-1 win against Young Boys. Benjamin Sesko became the younger RB player to score in the Champions League as he joined Mohamed Simakan and Xaver Schlager in finding the back of the net.

This is the third time RB Leipzig has faced City in the UCL, with the German team remaining in both home games. We’re not sure that stat will improve after this one.

Suggested Bet: E. Haaland anytime scorer @ $1.68

Porto vs Barcelona

October 5th, 6:00am

There’s no doubt about it; the punters have found Barcelona at $1.82.

It all comes off the back of their incredible 5-0 drubbing of Royal Antwerp in the opening game of Group H, with their 22 shots resulting in goals to Felix (2), Lewandowski, Bataille (own goal), and Gavi.

It was a stark reminder of the power that Barca possesses, and their biggest Champions League win since beating PSG 6-1 in 2016-17.

Porto, who have won five of their first seven in Primeira Liga, defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 with a treble in the first half. It was the first time since 2014-15 they’ve opened their UCL account with a win, but a four-game losing streak against a resurgent Barca might be a bit too much.

Suggested Bet: Barcelona to win @ $1.82

Dortmund vs. Milan

October 5th, 6:00am

The importance of this match-up cannot be understated as both sides try to work their way into the top two of a star-studded Group F alongside PSG and Newcastle.

Dortmund is certainly under the most pressure following their 0-2 loss to PSG two weeks ago, but the market ($2.35) expects them to hit back at home.

It’s been a hit-and-miss start to the season for more than one reason, with the German side winning just four of their first six games in the Bundesliga and kicking just 12 goals.

On the other hand, Milan won’t be satisfied with their draw against Newcastle, with their 19 extra shots at goal meaning nothing as Olivier Giroud and his teammates failed to find the back of the net.

The 2006-07 champions can ill afford a misstep in this Group but will be buoyed by their history against German sides and the fact they haven’t lost to one in the UCL since 2003.

Suggested Bet: Borussia Dortmund to win @ $2.35
