Argentina vs. France

Sporting events aren’t much bigger than a World Cup final, and this contest is as good a match-up as anyone could have hoped.

Both France and Argentina were firm favourites heading into the tournament and have done little to shift any thinking on them since.

Argentina had a slip-up in its opening game with a 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia but has not looked back since. There have been some challenging moments, such as the narrow win over Australia and the quarter-final against the Netherlands that went to a penalty shoot out but throughout, they have been playing with skill and belief that exceeds any of their opponents.

Lionel Messi has been outstanding in his final World Cup, leading the Argentinian team the whole way through, with his best performance coming in the semi-final win against Croatia. He has the ability to both finish and set up goal opportunities and is the key for his team once again.

Messi will be a strong focus both from a fan and opposition perspective. Still, he is surrounded by some of the best sports talents, including Juan Alvarez, who netted two goals against Croatia and has ascended his standing to be one of the best going around and being Messi’s heir apparent.

A World Cup would be the crowning achievement in Messi’s decorated career, but they have a big mountain to climb in France.

Les Bleus have played with a dashing flair that has bamboozled opponents throughout the World Cup. There had been some injury and morale concerns leading into it, but they were exceptional once they took to the pitch.

There is a tremendous depth to the French team, with players coming off the bench to have immediate impacts at crucial times. Randal Kolo Muani was the latest of the French team to perform that role, and you can expect him to be prominent once again.

Olivier Giroud has confirmed his status as an all-time great in this tournament, but the real key here is Kylian Mbappe, arguably the best player in the world. Mbpagge and his PSG teammate Messi are the marquee attractions here, both leading the Golden Boot race with five goals apiece. Mbappe’s exquisite skill and speed are beyond peers, and the Argentinian defence will not faze him. Look for him to score and lead his team to a historic second consecutive World Cup win.
