Doomben Tips & Previews, Saturday 21st May

Zaaki is out to defend his Doomben Cup crown ahead of the best bets from the nine-race card at Doomben this weekend.

More wet weather is predicted for Brisbane as the Punter’s Prince gears up for Doomben Cup Day on Saturday.

After landing his best bet of the weekend in Mazu, the Prince is playing with fire and taking on Zaaki!

doomben race 1

#9 the catch

Michael Costa has found another intelligent horse.

This time it is in the form of The Catch, which has scored straightforward wins in a lower grade.

He makes the step up to city grade with a powerful platform, swimming through the wet going.

Suggested Bet: The Catch wins at $2.50

Confidence Rating: 8.5/10

doomben race 2

#9 don't stop

A massive resuming run from Don’t Stop has him in this race at long odds.

Big jockey booking with Nash Rawiller going on.

This galloper is yet to miss a place from his three second-up efforts, and he enjoys racing on wet tracks.

It has to be worth a tiny peanut each way.

Suggested Bet: Don’t stop at $16 for the win and $4.4 for the place.

Confidence Rating: 5/10

doomben race 3

#1 sheeza belter

Acquired by Peter & Paul Snowden from Western Australia.

This filly has a heap of talent and has a severe engine under the hood.

The Snowden polish will see her peaking in her second start for the stable.

She comes up an excellent each-way odds and will need a bit of luck from the outside barrier to be a threat to Zougotcha.

Suggested Bet: Sheeza Belter each way at $9.5 the win and $2.90 the place.

Confidence Rating: 6.5/10

doomben race 4

#3 niedorp

Niedorp is a speedy mare for Tony Gollan who looks ready to fire first-up from a 112 day spell.

The five-year-old sprinter trialled up strongly at Doomben over 840 metres and her eight first up runs have tallied up three wins and four minor placings.

Each-way all day from a very cushy barrier with Jimy Byrne aboard.

Suggested Bet: Niedorp each-way at $7 the win and $2.65 the place.

Confidence Rating: 7.5/10

doomben race 5

#3 yamakazi

A big booming run for the new stable has Yamakazi ready for a second-up assault at the mile.

She is a horse who needs things to go her way, given her get-back-run-on racing style, but it was hard to ignore the resuming effort over 1400 metres.

William Pike is booked from the inside gate, and this mare did start the shortest in the lead-up form, which is a bulk reference for this race.

Suggested Bet: Yamakazi each-way at

Confidence Rating: 6.5/10

doomben race 6

#4 buffalo river

Buffalo River is tough on-pacer who thrives in wet conditions.

He has a high crushing speed which makes him a handful to run down when conditions suit him.

He is almost certainly going to get the heavy track he is looking for to be at his best.

Should be able to high-ball out in the lead and control proceedings.

Suggested Bet: Buffalo River each-way at $5 the win and $2.10 the place.

Confidence Rating: 7.5/10

doomben race 7

#9 polly grey

This could be a crazy analysis, but Zaaki can be beaten here.

Have a look at the run of Polly Grey in behind Zaaki during the Hollindale Stakes, and you will know why.

The Chris Waller-trained mare stuck on the game entirely behind this star weight-for-age champion despite having a gap between runs.

A few runners here can soften up Zaaki in the lead and leave it for Polly Grey to chime in over the top.

Suggested Bet: Polly Grey each way at $8.5 the win and $2.10 the place.

Confidence Rating: 6/10

doomben race 8

#12 aravaene

Aravene is a progressive filly who faces her toughest test to date.

She is trained by gun horse lady Caroline Jennings who almost always places her horses to perfection.

This looks no exception with William Pike aboard from barrier four following a very smart win at Sandown over 1800 metres.

Think she has a stack of ability and we are yet to really tap into yet.

This race looks the day for her to stamp herself as a city horse.

Suggested Bet: Aravene each-way at $9 the win and $3 the place.

Confidence Rating: 7/10

doomben race 9

#2 rubiquitous

A very tough race to end the day means the confidence ratings are low.

Going with the battle-hardened horse in the form of Rubiquitous.

He has had a month off since his very nice win at Listed level over 1110 metres and that should hold him in good stead here.

He maps to either lead or take the sit one out and back, which means he is a strong winning chance.

The problem is there are a handful of winning hopes alongside him.

Suggested Bet: Rubiquitous each-way at $6.5 the win and $2.40 the place.

Confidence Rating: 3/10
