Morphettville Tips & Previews, Saturday 14th May

The running of the Group 1 South Australian Derby sees the Punter's Prince go through all the best bets across the nine-race card at Morphettville.

On Saturday, nine races are upon us for South Australian Derby Day at Morphettville.

The Punter’s Prince has found all the best bets with his confidence rating for each race on the card.

Morphettville race 1

#12 miss daniel

In a low-confidence race, Miss Daniel is the one to land with.

She is a first-up in her second preparation after progressing to BM-64 grade and having short starting prices in similar grade races to what she faces here.

Get the inkling she will firm closer to the jump given she has drawn a handy barrier and gets the claim for apprentice jockey Angus Chung.

Suggested Bet: Miss Daniel win at $4.2

Confidence Rating: 3/10

Morphettville race 2

#3 my boy birmingham

My Boy Birmingham gets the services of Johnny Allen.

He was beaten as a $2.90 favourite when resuming over an unsuitable distance and race shape.

Drawing the wide barrier might be a slight problem, but he is a winning chance if he can press forward and get cover.

Suggested Bet: My Boy Birmingham each way at $5 the win and $2 the place.

Confidence Rating: 4.5/10

morphettville race 3

#1 twin shoes

Twin Shoes is a colt on the rise and has put together two excellent performances through his first two races.

He is now hitting peak race fitness and should appreciate the rise to 1400 metres.

Hit the line hard from the back of the field the last start and can settle closer in this race.

Tough to be too confident with many different form lines combined, but he is the one with the most substantial city run to date.

Suggested Bet: Twin Stars win at $2.90

Confidence Rating: 6.5/10

morphettville race 4

#12 point blaze

He just loves his racing, and we know what we will get from him.

He will settle midfield and try to run on.

He will need some luck in the run, but he has the fitness and sprinting ability to run down the leaders here.

At worst, he gets in on the minimum weight and can finish in the top three.

Suggested Bet: Point Blaze each way at $5.5 for the win and $2.15 for the place.

Confidence Rating: 5/10

morphettville race 5

#1 calypso reign

Cops 60kgs at the handicap as the best horse in the race.

He boasts from behind brilliant sprinter Scorched Earth and has a handy turn of foot capable of winning this race.

This race will be a clear target, given it is sponsored by the syndicate that controls its owners, and they will want to have him revved up.

Very bullish, he can run the top three.

Suggested Bet: Calypso Reign each way at $6 for the win and $2.4 for the place.

Confidence Rating: 7.5/10

morphettville race 6

#2 thrill kill

Thrill Kill has not won for while, however, Johnny Allen is the exact jockey who can get the extra length or two out of him to get a win.

Allen should be able to blend him in midfield with cover from the middle pin.

With a strong fitness base, he is the each-way bet of the day.

Suggested Bet: Thrill Kill each-way at $6 the win and $2.25 the place

Confidence Rating: 8.5/10

morphettville race 7

#1 illation

If Mick Price believes this horse is Cox Plate bound, then the Adelaide Guineas is going to be a walk in the park.

Bolted in over 1400 metres at this track a fortnight ago and did in sensational fashion.

A repeat of the figures he posted lasted without the natural elevation expected here, this field will get nowhere near him.

However, cannot recommend backing him at the price.

Suggested Bet: Illation win at $1.35

Confidence Rating: 9/10

morphettville race 8

#1 alegron

Alegron is the class horse of the field.

His win in the VRC St Ledger was that of a smart stayer as he weaved his way through traffic to crush the line and win easily.

Damien Oliver rides him again here and he gets in beautifully at the weights against a bang-average field.

Best of the day.

Suggested Bet: Alegron win at $2.80

Confidence Rating: 9/10

morphettville race 9

#5 kasami

He returned to winning ways with a gritty effort at BM-58 level last start.

He progressed to BM-64 grade two starts ago but went miserably after something went amiss with galloping action.

The stable has been going greats guns over the last month, and this horse represents good each-way value.

Suggested Bet: Kasami each way at $11 for the win and $3.50 for the place.

Confidence Rating: 7/10
