Championships Day 2 Randwick Tips & Previews, Saturday 9th April

Four Group 1s greet us for Day 2 of The Championships on a wet Randwick surface as the Punter's Prince gets his gumboots and umbrella out for the best bets.

Group 1s galore approach as Day 2 of The Championships takes place this Saturday.

The Punter’s Prince has all the best bets from all the big races on what is set to be a very heavy Randwick surface.

Randwick race 6

#4 honeycreeper

Honeycreeper is the filly who really stands out in the 2022 Australian Oaks.

The Godolphin three-year-old has built up a very strong profile over the last few months and her great constitution has come to the fore being up for as long as she has.

James Cummings will certainly have her fitness levels at a strong residual level capable of running out 2400 metres without qualms.

Hugh Bowman lands the ride after piloting her to victory in the Adrian Knox a fortnight ago – which is the race her stablemate Colette won before going on to win this race.

Wet track is in her favour as is the wide barrier, with the field likely to fan off the fence as the day progresses.

Suggested Bet: Honeycreeper win at $4.20

Suggested Exotic: Quinella 1 & 4

randwick race 7

$3 stockman

Ran in the WFA Group 1 Tancred Stakes last start and did a great job to run second behind star mare Duais.

He is now racing like a horse who is going to love the step up 3200 metres and getting back to handicap levels means he only has to carry 51kgs.

At the weights, he almost looks a shoe in given how well he performed last start.

Draws the perfect swoopers barriers on a track that is surely going to play down the outside by this stage of the day.

Suggested Bet: Stockman win at $4.80

randwick race 8

#6 verry elleegant

Write Verry Elleegant and Chris Waller off at your own peril.

She was a beaten force in the Ranvet last start when running second behind Montefilia in a six-horse field.

Those small fields can often bring odds-on pops undone, but with nine runners engaged, this should be a genuinely run 2000-metre Group 1 WFA event.

This is clearly her grand final race and James McDonald has shown plenty of faith in her to stick in the saddle and not opt to ride the other stars in this race.

We know she handles the wet, we know she thrives under pressure and she loves racing at Randwick.

Backing her to bounce back into winning form as she sails through the twilight of her career.

Suggested Bet: Verry Elleegant win at $3.20

Suggested Exotic: Trifecta – 6/ 2, 8, 9/ 2, 8, 9

Randwick race 9

#14 yonce

Six wins from six starts.

Yonce is a no-fuss mare who puts herself into races, finds the gaps and has an electric turn of speed when asked.

She is racing without her hooves touching the ground at the moment and will be hard to beat again.

Love the drop 2000 metres to 1600 metres and she brings in a completely different form line.

She is the fresh horse on the scene and has not been busted up by the wet Sydney tracks.

The stable is brilliant at getting its horses to peak in Group 1s and this looks no exception.

Suggested Bet: Yonce each-way at $6.5 the win and $2.40 the place.

Suggested Exotic: Boxed Trifecta – 1, 3, 14
