Standish Handicap Tips & Preview, Saturday 15th January

The Punter's Prince goes through the runner-by-runner guide for the Standish Handicap over 1200 metres up the straight at Flemington.

It is nearly $5 the field in what is a hot edition of the Standish Handicap at Flemington this year.

The Punters Prince goes through each runner to seperate the wheat from the chafe.

#1 The astrologist

leon & troy corstens

Loves doing his racing up the straight.

He has had eight starts for three wins and four places.

Damien Oliver will put him on the speed and he will be hard to run down.

Might just be lacking the race fitness to run to his peak.

Odds: $4.8 the win and $1.95 the place.
Finishing position: 2nd

#2 halvorsen

robbie griffiths & mathew de kock

Another horse who does his best racing up the Flemington straight.

The only knock on him are his credentials at 1200 metres.

He is usually at this best when he races fresh over 1000 metres, whereas the extra 200 metres just takes the zip out of his closing speed.

Odds: $6.5 the win and $2.30 the place.
Finishing position: 6th

#3 turaath

maddie raymond

The stable star for Maddie Raymond who progressed through her grades beautifully in her first Australian preparation.

This mare will be at her best when she is third-up and beyond as she rises up towards the 1400 metres.

She has a picket fence of wins next to her name, but might just a find the top two a little bit sharper than her.

Odds: $4.8 the win and $1.95 the place.
Finishing position: 3rd

#4 deep image

Rhys Archard

Would be a huge shock if he ran a place let alone win.

Will likely start closer to $101.

Odds: $71 the win and $16 the place.
Finishing position: Last

#5 Mileva

Phillip Stokes

Has not run a bad race this campaign.

Proved she can handle straight racing with a speedy win over 1000 metres in the Kensington Stakes back on December 11 last year.

Has since has a very slick 1000-metre jump out and is a top four chance here.

The big query, like a few in this field, is whether she can translate her 1000-metre straight form into strong 1200-metre form.

Odds: $5.5 the win and $2.15 the place.
Finishing position: 4th

#6 gamekeeper

tony & calvin mcevoy

A resuming middle-distance galloper who will need the run.

Will find most of these too fast for him as he builds a fitness base towards 2000 metres and beyond.

Odds: $26 the win and $6 the place
Finishing position: 9th

#7 hightail

peter and paul snowden

Has fairly solid first-up credentials with six resuming runs boasting two wins and two placings.

He does a look a little outclassed, although his jump out and trials suggest he might run a cheeky race.

Odds: $26 the win and $6 the place
Finishing position: 7th

#8 munitions

james cummings

Long odds and deservedly so.

Will need to lift considerably on what he has done this campaign if he wishes to feature in the finish.

Cannot see him winning this race.

Odds: $18 the win and $4.8 the place.
Finishing position: 8th

#9 outlaws revenge

ryan balfour

South Australian sprinter who finished behind very smart sprinter Marabi last start

Might be drawn in the right part of the track, which brings him into top five calculations.

He has a brilliant record at 1200 metres with five wins from six starts.

Should run well.

Odds: $8.5 the win and $2.7 the place.
Finishing position: 5th

#10 It'sourtime

danny O'brien

It’sourtime could very well be the best bet on the program at Flemington.

His two runs up the straight this campaign have been super and rate well enough to win a race of this caliber.

The drop back from 1200 metres to 1100 metres last start was a great platform and fitness base to use heading into what is clearly his target race.

He arguably should have won at Caulfield last week if not for some bad luck behind the very heavily backed Scorched Earth.

Gets in on the minimum weight of 54kgs and will be flying home late in the race.

Odds: $$.6 the win and $1.85 the place.
Finishing position: 1st

#11 rock prophet

ray besanko

Struggled to keep up with the field in lesser grade last start.

It is a ‘no thanks’ in this event.

Odds: $41 the win and $8 the place.
Finishing position: 11th

#12 capriccio

daniel bowman

The connection do not really excite the punters here.

Carpiccio does boast a very impressive up-the-straight victory last year, but he did start a long price that day.

Will need a lot to go his way to feature in the places.

Odds: $21 the win and $5.5 the place.
Finishing position: 10th
