Twilight racing from ‘The Heath’ as Caulfield gets set for Wednesday’s eight-race midweek card.
With the rail out in the 12-metre position, it should favour those horses drawn to lead or be near the lead.
Our team has looked through the program and found some great each-way value as well as the best bet which comes up in race eight.
Caulfield race 1
#2 toronto terrier
It was quite a surprise to see the big double-figure odds about Toronto Terrier.
The Mike Moroney-trained two-year-old colt by Toronado jumped out well enough at Flemington over 800 metres to suggest he can make an impact on debut.
In a jump out run in 49.01, he cruised to the line under very light riding and will clearly have a stack of improvement to come out of that effort into race day.
Like the way he stuck on late, which suggests the 1200 metres on race day will not worry him.
Big jockey booking with Jye Mcneil being handed the ride.
Having a little each-way play.
Suggested Bet: Toronto Terrier each-way at $10 the win and $3.3 the place.
Suggested Exotic: Quinella 2 & 4
caulfield race 4
#6 chase on the case
Chase On The Case looks the likely leader in this race and can control the tempo out in front.
He has a great base of fitness to run out a strong 1440 metres in this race having done his racing over the mile at his last three starts.
Hoping jockey Tatum Bull can turn this into a stamina-sapping event given how much rock-hard fit this horse and that fact he will be likely be strong late in the run.
The three-kilo claim of Bull will also help this galloper’s cause as will a barrier that is likely to keep in clear air and out of trouble.
Expect Bull to slide across, take the lead and give this horse a huge kick at the top of the straight.
Suggested Bet: Chase On The Case each-way at $9 the win and $2.6 the place.
Suggested Exotic: Boxed First Four – 3, 4, 9, 8, 10
caulfield race 7
#1 sweetzou
A soft barrier and the three-kilo claim have Sweetzou well set-up to the win this 1000-metre sprint.
The four-year-old mare has been racing well at Moonee Valley in the 955-metre heats after drawing wide barriers.
Think we will see the best of her today as she can be saved up for a sprinting burst in this race from barrier three.
Laura Lafferty has plenty of options from the barrier; she can either kick up and hold the lead or take a sit.
Either way, this horse is a massive each-way chance in this event.
Suggested Bet: Sweetzou each-way at $6 the win and $2.25 the place.
Suggested Exotic: Trifecta – 1, 9/ 1, 6, 9/ 1, 6, 9, 11, 16
caulfield Race 8
#5 kentucky casanova
Kentucky Casanova comes out of what looks to be a pretty strong form line for this type of level after running third behind Pioneer River.
That horse has since come out and bolted in up the straight on New Year’s Day to frank the form and our selection here finds a very winnable race.
He drops down in grade, but only goes up half-a-kilo from his win in BM-64 grade from two starts ago thanks to the claim from in-form apprentice Josh Richards.
This four-year-old gelding will just amble himself up towards the lead or a pair back and enjoy a perfect run in transit from the barrier.
If he runs up to the rating of his last two starts, it is really hard to see how they beat him.
Suggested Bet: Kentucky Casanova win at $2.35
