Eight races present themselves at Werribee today as the BetDeluxe crew finds the best bets on the program.
A filly in the first race has caught the eye at the jump outs, while race six also gifts us another opportunity for a bet.
Werribee race 1
#10 Vaettir
Vaettir showed great improvement from jump out to jump out in preparation for this debut run over 1000 metres.
The Mitchell Freedman-trained three-year-old filly was a bit tardily away in her jump out on November 9 and may have finished last, but it was what she did at her next jump out that has us excited.
She was still a bit slow to begin in her December 17 jump out, however, she showed great speed to muster and kick up on the inside of runners to find the front and win.
Get the feeling something similar will occur in this race given she draws an inside gate and will not want to be caught too far back.
She seems to have a nice turn of foot and acceleration, which should bode well to getting her out of maiden grade.
Suggested Bet: Vaettir win at $3.7
Suggested Exotic: Boxed Trifecta – 1, 2, 10
Werribee race 4
#8 ridgers
Having a slightly speculative play on three-year-old filly Ridgers with the idea that Michael Poy will push forward from the barrier.
The Richard Laming-trained galloper has been getting back and running on, while progressing from 1450 metres up to the mile at this two runs back from a spell.
She has done all her best work late in those races to suggest she needs further than what she has been racing in.
She now looks set to make the elevation to 2000 metres in what looks to be a race void of early speed.
Has to be an each-way play here given the current price we are getting.
Suggested Bet: Ridgers each-way at $5.5 the win and $1.80 the place.
Suggested Exotic: Quinella 8 & 9
Werribee race 6
#8 Hopkins
Hopkins had not had much luck with barriers at his last few starts, but he seems to get his chance to atone for a few unlucky runs.
The four-year-old gelding has been getting back, running on and is starting to become a bit of a pain for punters who are backing him.
That being said, this race sets up nicely for him with the middle barrier looking the ideal spot for him to slide across towards the rail and find midfield position in the run with some cover.
Just hoping jockey Craig Newitt can muster him up out of the gates to be as close to the leaders as possible during the race.
The one to beat if he can repeat some of the late sectionals he showed in his last few runs last campaign.
Suggested Bet: Hopkins win at $4.2
werribee race 8
#9 Squizzy Mizzy
This looks a match-race in two between Squizzy Mizzy and Under The Dunes.
Going to side with the race-fit horse in Squizzy Missy who gets a lovely drop in the weights after the four-kilo claim from Sheridan Clarke.
She should be able to wrestle the lead off Under The Dunes in this event with that rival being first-up and having to lug around 61kgs.
The only query will be the last 50 metres, but we are hoping Clarke has pinched enough of a breather during the middle stages to hold on.
Werribee does usually play leader-ish and that is to our advantage here.
Suggested Bet: Squizzy Mizzy win at $2.90
