Moonee Valley Tips & Previews, Friday October 1st

The Wizard of Odds prepares us for another eventful Friday night under the lights of Moonee Valley.

The Wizard of Odds breaks down the action under the lights of Moonee Valley.

#3 Star Midfielder

Star Midfielder will make his progression to town tonight after breaking his maiden status with a hard-fought three-quarter-of-a-length win at Bendigo over 1400 metres.

The Ciaron Maher & Dave Eustace three-year-old-gelding hit this 1533-metre race with only 56.5kgs thanks to Josh Richards claiming 3kgs off the allotted 59.5kgs.

He is going to settle in the rear half of the field so that extra weight that has come off him is a bonus.

With the forecast rain about, being out wider on the track and staying away from the inside lanes which will be a touch damp, might just be the exact place to be.

Happy to take the gamble that he will be on the better ground out wider and the fact he is fully fit and will be able to sustain a wide run.

Suggested Bet: Star Midfielder win at $3.2

moonee valley race 4

#6 Steel Skies

Backing in the staying form of Steel Skies.

He is still a fairly lightly-raced four-year-old gelding having only had the 13 starts and having fresh legs in these staying races will provide him with the dash he needs to have competitive edge over this field.

He finds weight relief in this race as well after lugging 60.5kgs to victory at Geelong over 2440 metres in BM-64 grade.

Dropping down to 55.5kgs for a step up in grade has him perfectly set-up to win this race and this field is not any more difficult than what he has faced at his last three starts.

Damian Lane will keep him out of trouble from barrier ten and he’ll come at the leaders with a looping run at the 600-metre mark where his fitness will take him a long way to winning the race.

Suggested Bet: Steel Skies win at $4

Suggested Exotic: Trifecta – 6/ 5, 7/ 3, 4, 5, 7, 9

moonee valley race 5

#4 Cosmic Rhapsody

Cosmic Rhapsody was far from disgraced at his first run in town this preparation despite starting a $51 chance.

He finished midfield in BM-70 grade up the straight and now finds a much easier race and softer speed that will allow to be more competitive and closer in the run.

Senior jockey John Allen has been booked and the drop down to 955 metres looks ideal for this sprinter’s late finishing burst.

If this five-year-old gelding can replicate what he is done at his last two starts – and there is no suggestion he cannot – then he is in this race.

While they all go mad up front, Allen will be stalking the leaders in a midfield and hoping they have not pinched too much of a break at the top of straight.

We can back this horse each-way at the current price.

Suggested Bet: Cosmic Rhapsody each-way at $11 the win and $2.90 the place.

Suggested Exotic: Boxed Trifecta – 1, 4, 5, 7

moonee valley race 7

#9 Swindon Lass

Swindon Lass finds herself a very suitable city race after outdoing her rivals at Sale.

She was very heavily backed to win when being $5.5 into $3.5 in BM-64 grade over 1717 metres and she did not let punters down when careering away to win by a length-and-a-half.

She is actually going to be better suited with this rise in distance to 2040 metres with, arguably, the best run of her career coming at this distance range when running third at Caulfield behind Red Santa in a feature staying race during July.

Her last start run would suggest she is actually in the form of her career and going better than she was back in the winter staying races she competed in.

Any improvement on that will see her the main winning hope and she could very well start the favourite.

Making her the best of the night.

Suggested Bet: Swindon Lass win at $4.4
