Heineken Summer Cup Racing Tips and Previews, Saturday 26th December

best bets and value around the country for Saturday races

Happy Boxing Day!

It’s that time of the week again where the Wizard of Odds let it be known his best bets and value for the weekend of racing from Caulfield, Randwick, Morphettville and Eagle Farm.

Caulfield Race 4 - FRANK OBRIEN (BM78)

#7 wicklow tow

Loved the run of Wicklow Town last start.

He had a tough go of it at Flemington where he was three wide up on the pace and had to cut the breeze the whole way.  It was a super effort that day as he held his spot to the line to run third.

He’s drawn a middle barrier here and Craig Williams has been booked over the apprentice Will Price to give this horse the best possible chance of winning.

Suggested bet: Wicklow Town win

Caulfield Race 9 - DENNIS HANRAHAN (BM78)

#14 takumi

Takumi had absolutely zero luck at Moonee Valley last start. He savaged the line late in that race to run second but with any clear air prior to straightening he wins that race comfortably.

Apprentice Madiston Lloyd, who rode him on that occasion, hops off and senior jockey John Allen takes the ride. He’ll probably get back to the rear half of the field but he’s drawn a barrier where he can settle a touch closer in the run and gets an extra 200m worth of straight to let down rather than having to corner while asking for an effort.

Looks a great each-way bet at the $12.

Suggested bet: Takumi each-way.

randwick Race 6 - TAB HIGHWAY CLASS 3 HANDICAP

#17 pinnacle prince

Pinnacle Prince brings the best Highway form into this race.

He’s the stablemate to Brett Cavanough’s freak mare It’s Me and his last run was against her. He finished second on that occasion after being beaten by a half a length by the eventual Kosciuszko winner.

His two trials in preparation for this showed us he’s ready to fire first-up and the booking of James McDonald signals a huge sign of intent.

Suggested bet: Pinnacle Prince win

randwick race 6 - heineken summer cup

#9 spirit ridge

Spirit Ridge is ready to win now.

His first two runs back from a spell have been more than satisfactory to suggest he’s capable of winning this race. First-up he was runner-up in a benchmark-78 at Newcastle where he had to lug around 61kgs over the mile and drew a very wide barrier that day.

He then stepped up in grade but stayed at the 1600m range to run second again behind a handy type in Kirwan’s Lane.

Tomorrow he tumbles down in weight to 53kgs and draws a middle barrier where he can blend into the race with cover.

Suggested bet: Spirit Ridge win

eagle farm race 4 - MAGIC MILLIONS B.J. MCLACHLAN STAKES

#1 shaquero

Shaquero was sensational on debut at Randwick when he had to burn at the candle at both ends racing hard up on the pace and pinging clear in the business end.

Since that win in early October he’s had two nice trials to get him tuned up for this race with his target the Magic Millions 2yo Classic. This is first attempt at 1200m but the way he kept finding the line on debut suggests he’ll find this a walk in the park.

Suggested bet: Shaquero win.

morphetville race 8 - ACCOLADE WINES HANDICAP

#7 my prince charming

One of the most intriguing runners on the Morphettville program is My Prince Charming.

Trainer Andrew Homann ventures over here from his Pakenham stable in Victoria and he’s booked senior South Australian hoop Todd Pannell to handle the reins for this seven-year-old gelding.

Homann obviously hasn’t come over to South Australia to just have a look at the wineries. Great each-way chance.

Suggested bet: My Prince Charming each-way.
